On April 28, 2026, Save Red Rock joined Clark County, state and federal partners, and a group of local cyclists to celebrate the official opening of Phase 1 of the Red Rock Legacy Trail. After more than 20 years of advocacy, planning and fundraising, the first mile of the trail is paved and open to the public.

What’s open now

Phase 1 is a one-mile, out-and-back paved path along westbound Charleston Boulevard, just past Sky Vista Drive. The 12-foot-wide multi-use trail includes a new bridge over the wash.

The phase also brought some important safety upgrades to the area:

  • A new traffic signal at Charleston Boulevard and Sky Vista Drive
  • Dedicated parking for trail users
  • The Red Rock Canyon entrance sign has moved to a safer spot, with its own parking area so visitors can stop for photos without pulling off the highway

The trail is open to walkers, runners, cyclists, strollers and pedal-assist e-bikes (Class 1 and 3). Motorized vehicles are not allowed.

Why it matters

Save Red Rock began pushing for a safe path through the conservation area after off-duty Metro officer Don Albietz was killed by a hit-and-run driver while training on his bike. As Save Red Rock President Heather Fisher told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “The problem was there was no bike lane back then.” Save Red Rock went on to raise the first $12 million for the project.

“We’re so grateful that now we have something concrete to show for it,” Fisher said, “and when it came time to name it, we knew it had to be the Red Rock Legacy Trail.”

The riders who joined the inaugural ride agreed. “We just rode it, and we can tell you, it is so smooth and so safe,” said Susan Feinberg. Robert Samano of Las Vegas Adobo Velo said, “This is our backyard for a lot of us that live here in Summerlin.”

What’s next

Phase 1 is the first of five phases. When it’s finished, the Red Rock Legacy Trail will run about 19 miles, from Summerlin to Blue Diamond Road, and connect visitors to the Visitor Center, viewpoints and trailheads along the way. The remaining phases are in design now, and Commissioner Jones said the full trail should be finished within about three years.
